Structural evolution in a pyrolitic magma ocean under mantle conditions

چکیده

Structure and properties of terrestrial magma oceans control the co-evolution core, mantle atmosphere early Earth, but are poorly understood because discrepancies remain between experiments theoretical calculations. Here we combine acoustic velocity measurements ab initio simulations on pyrolite glass/melt with a silicate Earth-like composition. In complex system, find gradual increase sound increasing pressure. Through simulations, this is explicable by transition from four- to six-fold coordinated Si occurring over entire regime. These results at odds recent X-ray diffraction measurements, which show an abrupt change in Si-O coordination 35 GPa. It however consistent high-pressure data, where Ni partitioning molten metal exhibits similar Unlike amorphous silica, smooth structural evolution multicomponent system implies progressive changes ocean depth, such as density, element transport properties, which, when incorporated into models, may improve our understanding history Earth other rocky planets.

E Evolution, Lunar: From Magma Ocean to Crust Formation

The lunar crust provides a record of the planetary formation and early evolutionary processes and contains a wealth of information about the origin and evolution of the Earth-Moon system (e.g., Taylor 1982; NRC 2007; Canup 2008, 2012; Cuk and Stewart 2012; Young et al. 2016). Understanding these processes is crucial for the reconstruction of the early evolutionary stages of the Earth, e.g., the...

Nonfractional Crystallization of a Terrestrial Magma Ocean

It has been suggested that evolution of a terrestrial magma ocean does not unavoidably follow a fractional crystallization scenario. Convection is able to preclude differentiation until a sharp viscosity increase occurs near some critical crystal fraction. However, this kind of crystallization and its physical and chemical consequences have not been previously studied. •Ve consider an end-membe...

Large mantle magma reservoir of Afar, Ethiopia

Most of the Earth’s crust is created at midoceanic ridges where two tectonic plates move away from each other, known as constructive plate boundary system and extends for ∼60,000 km around the globe (Wright et al., 2006). It creates characteristic extensional structures, wherein tectonic stress is primarily released by rifting processes, which thus forms major system of normal faults and volcan...
